Community Day 2017

On December 21, Browning held its fourth school-wide Community Day during which the entire student body (Kindergarten to Form VI) interacted and focused on a division-specific theme. Director of Equity and Diversity Dr. Betty Noel noted, “This day is a wonderful opportunity for the older students to demonstrate leadership and camaraderie with their younger peers and for the younger boys to make connections with the older ones."

In the morning the boys and teachers divided into intraschool groups and played games, then participated in a large-scale scavenger hunt followed by a community lunch. After that they engaged in division-specific programming. Lower School boys attended an assembly called “Be a Superhero” that focused on kindness and allyship, while Middle School students participated in the Anti-Defamation League's “No Place for Hate” anti-bullying workshop.

Forms II-VI boys focused on gender with various activities led by students in the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and Gender Studies & Feminism Club. Transgender athlete Schuyler Bailar was present for an interview and Q&A session; the Harvard University swimmer, is the first openly transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division 1 men’s team. His charismatic personality and keen sense of humor combined to create a riveting presentation followed by an enthusiastic question-and-answer session.
