Grytte Newspaper Staff Tour Reuters Times Square

On May 26, the Grytte newspaper staff toured Thomson Reuters, the world’s largest international multimedia news provider. After a brisk walk to Times Square in 90-degree heat, the boys were anxious to enter the building. They were accompanied by Grytte Advisor Jeremy Katz ’04,  who took the photographs for this story, and Director of Academic Technology Saber Khan, who was instrumental in setting up the trip. The following report is by young alum and former editor of the Grytte, Chris Russo '15, who is now attending Boston College where he is an assistant news editor for the college's independent publication, The Heights.

The Grytte staff were greeted by Global Head of Business Development & Yield Ashok Ganapam, who offered a wealth of information regarding the history of the 165-year-old company. Senior Interactive Producer Frank Tantillo discussed how carrier pigeons were the first type of technology used to transport news updates. Since then, Mr. Tantillo said, technology has drastically changed. He explained the importance of real-time news updates and evolving technology in the world of journalism. He discussed Reuter’s "Terminal," the software that provides clients with detailed real-time updates.

Mr. Tantillo and Mr. Ganapam then led a tour through the newsroom where the staff were able to see reporters at work. Mr. Tantillo walked the boys through a television room, in which Reuter’s video segments were filmed. 

The Grytte staff are utilizing the tips they learned on the trip toward their fourth issue of the year scheduled for release on Prize Day, June 13.
