Mock Trial Team Makes Strong Showing

On February 5, Browning's mock trial team presented an assembly for the Upper School student body. Browning math teacher Marcia Wallace, sponsor of the team, offers the following report:

The Lower Gym was transformed into a spectacular court room, and 11 young men displayed their knowledge and skills as orators, lawyers and witnesses. This year’s case involves the arrest of a suspected drug dealer, seeking to press charges for possession and intent to sell. Each side was represented by two lawyers, and each called three witnesses to the stand. The team has been masterfully coached for the past 11 years by Katherine Weinhoff, a former Browning parent and current law professor at Fordham University.
 
Ms. Weinhoff said, "I feel that despite the fact our team is quite young and inexperienced this year, we made a very strong showing at Friday's assembly. This team shows tremendous promise, and they are growing with each passing day. We are very hopeful that they will do well in the tournament, which includes over 100 teams from all five boroughs of N.Y.C."

Ms. Wallace added, “It was a complete honor to have Judge Felicia Mennin at Browning for the proceedings. Judge Mennin also has a son who currently attends Browning. She was first appointed to Criminal Court by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2008 and was designated an Acting Supreme Court Justice in 2012. Judge Mennin offered the boys many compliments for their performance and added an excellent list of suggestions to help make the team even stronger as they approach their first two rounds of competition on Wednesday, February 24, and Wednesday, March 2.”
